John MacLean’s background is investment banking in municipal and project finance for energy and environmental projects. John has 34 years commercial finance experience with a wide range of investment structures for senior debt, municipal bond, leasing, factoring, subordinated debt, guarantees, project equity and corporate equity transactions and has worked on financing energy efficiency projects and companies throughout his career. His clients have included commercial and development financial institutions, energy services companies, utilities, public agencies and state and local governments on project development, procurement and finance assignments.
From 1995-2009, John worked mainly internationally as a financial advisor with the International Finance Corp., World Bank, Asian Development Bank, United Nations Environment Program and others to develop, structure and implement energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) investments and finance programs and transactions in emerging market countries including Argentina, Mexico, El Salvador, Peru, Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and South Africa. From 2009 to 2013, John’s work focused on structuring and arranging financing for EE project investments and designing and implementing EE development finance programs in the US, working with EE companies, contractors and project developers, State and local governments, the US Department of Energy, the National Governors Association, electric utilities and financial institutions. Current/recent work also include international assignments in the Philippines, Tanzania, China, Bangladesh, South Africa, Vietnam and Nicaragua on EE and RE project development and finance.
Mr. MacLean received his B.A. in Economics from Yale University in 1980 and has done graduate work in development economics and public finance. From 1988-90 he served on the Board and chaired the Fundraising Committee of the Boston Community Loan Fund. From 1992-1994 he served on the Board of Supervisors and chaired the Finance Committee of the Windham County (VT) Solid Waste Management District. From 1992-97, Mr. MacLean was an adjunct faculty member at Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, NH and Seattle, WA teaching courses in macro and sustainable economics, and taught sustainable economics at Evergreen State College (Olympia, WA) and Bainbridge Graduate Institute (Bainbridge Island, WA) (2008-2011). Mr. MacLean also speaks, reads and conducts business in Spanish. Mr. MacLean currently serves as the Board President for the South Sound Community Farm Land Trust.
